This is a fundraising party for the group Eco-Pirates who are recruiting crew for local Dolphin Spotting missions into the summer and beyond. Ticket and bar sales will be applied to the missions, getting boats ready and heading out and about the peninsula.

Eco Pirates!

We have two old yachts one in Lyttleton and one based at French Farm. After a fresh paint, antifoul and some minor work and installations over the spring, we will be set for a year of coastal cruising in the marine sanctuary spotting wildlife and reporting dolphin sightings to Doc. Come, help fix boats, learn to sail and come Sea Spotting with us. The SeaSpotter app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify marine mammals that people spot and photograph on their smartphones while at the beach or out boating.

Data collected through the app will enable scientists to build their knowledge and understanding of the numbers and type of marine mammals living in our seas.

Currently more than half of the marine mammals in the Department of Conservation’s Threat Classification system are listed as data deficient, meaning nobody knows exactly how many of them there are, let alone if they are endangered.

However, that could change if enough data is collected through the SeaSpotter app.

Eco-Pirates is a project sponsored by ARCADIA, locally we spot dolphins, across the pacific we are reef planting, bee keeping and building an ECO Camp amongst other fun projects. Join us. Sail with us. Explore with us. Become an Eco-Pirate
